How the gold rate in Pakistan is determined

Local gold prices are not set in isolation. The rate is driven mainly by three things:

  • The international gold price. Global spot gold is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and benchmarked to the London Bullion Market (LBMA).
  • The US dollar to PKR exchange rate. Because gold is priced in dollars, a weaker rupee pushes the local rate higher even when global prices are flat.
  • Local demand, duties and dealer premiums. Seasonal demand (weddings, Eid), import costs and jeweller spreads all feed into the final rate.

Gold price trend in Pakistan (2021–2026)

Over the past five years, the gold rate in Pakistan has risen sharply. In 2021, 24K gold was around Rs. 127,900 per tola; today it sits near Rs. 440,892 per tola. The main driver is the rupee: because gold is priced globally in dollars, a weaker rupee lifts the local rate even when international gold is steady. That is why so many Pakistani families have used gold to protect their savings against inflation.

24K, 22K, 21K and 18K gold explained

Karat (k) measures the purity of gold. 24K gold is the purest, 99.9% gold, which is why it is the standard for saving. 22K (about 91.6% pure) and 21K are most common for jewellery, while 18K (75% pure) is harder and used in finer pieces. The lower the karat, the lower the gold content, and the lower the price per gram. At Asasa you always save in pure 24K gold.
